VOTE FOR PEACE, NEUTRALITY AND TO PROTECT THE TRIPLE LOCK!

Representatives of peace groups from across Ireland will hold a Press Conference in Buswell’s Hotel, Dublin at 11.30 on Friday, 15th of November, to urge voters in the forthcoming election to vote for peace, neutrality and to save the Triple Lock.

The call will come in the context of the outgoing Coalition’s stated plan to undo the Triple Lock – the requirement for UN authorization if more than 12 Irish troops are deployed abroad. Without the Triple Lock, Irish Troops could be deployed on EU or NATO military operations, not to keep the peace but to kill and be killed. This would be a cynical breach of solemn constitutional promises made at both the Nice 2002 and Lisbon 2009 referendums. It would clear the way for intensifying already destructive entanglements with EU/NATO structures. For example,

  • Irish troops participating in military training exercises with NATO and EU battlegroups.
  • Irish troops providing weapons training and equipment to Ukraine while it’s at war with Russia.
  • Permitting the US military to use Shannon Airport while it arms Israel, a country on trial for genocide at the world’s top court in the Hague.
  • Allowing Israeli flights carrying tens of tonnes of war material to pass through Irish airspace unimpeded.

These actions violate Ireland’s neutrality, our constitutional commitment to peace, and our obligations under international law.

Speakers at the Press Conference will argue that abandoning the Triple Lock would betray the trust of the Irish people at two constitutional referendums. It will weaken Ireland’s commitment to the UN system, to UN peacekeeping, and to multilateralism. This comes at a time when the UN faces an unprecedented challenge with Israel’s genocide on Palestine and its war on Lebanon, where UN peacekeepers, including Irish Blue Helmets, have been threatened and directly targeted.

They will argue that this is no time to further undermine the UN system but that instead, Ireland should redouble its commitment to strengthening and reforming the UN, to genuine multilateralism and to international law.

Representatives of Peace Groups will call on all political parties and election candidates to commit publicly to upholding Ireland’s constitutional commitment to peace, to strengthening Irish neutrality, and to protecting the Triple Lock.
